YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY, you know that? I promised myself that I won’t make any of this real—that I won’t even hope that there would ever be something between us, but here I am, digging my grave as I steal a kiss from you. Our second kiss, to be specific. You might not remember it, but we kissed the same night the ship sank.

You threw a fit and told me about your promise to your parents that you’ll only kiss the man you’ll marry. Oh, how innocent we were back then. I honestly forgot about you years after the incident. But when I saw you rallying to re-open the Marshall’s case, it was as if that dying flame reignited.

Then I saw you with that bastard and found out that you’re carrying his child. Cupid must be laughing at me from whatever messed-up cloud he’s sitting on. I only wanted to ‘play house’ with you until you gain your memories—it wasn’t my intention to give in to the greedy bastard’s desire for more. I had a mission, but it looks like I’ll be steering this ship that we’re on to our inevitable demise, but… at least I have you.

You taught me to love someone other than myself—to love a child that isn’t mine... a child that isn’t born yet. I hope I never have to wake up from this dream. I want to dwell in it a little longer. I want to know more about you. I want to know all the things you like and dislike. I want to know what makes you tick—what makes your chocolate-brown eyes soften other than the sweet little tidbits I show you. What spell had you cast on me anyway? You must have bewitched me the night we met. I’m sure of it.

Even as you sit like a child happily enjoying your savory meal, you keep me captivated—no, enchanted. Maybe it was a bad idea to move back here. Being alone with you…

I don’t dare finish that indecent thought and am glad that a distraction came to my rescue. Someone was hollering outside the window, and I stood up to see who it was.

It was one of the farmers I met at the bar—Jake Friday, I think, is his name. He’s a muscular lad, and if the crow’s feet at the corners of his eyes were anything to go by, I’d guess he’s around his late forties or early fifties.

Pushing the drapes back, I noticed that he was not alone. A couple of townspeople were gathered alongside them, and I even recognized some of them.

“Well, howdy there, neighbor.” The denim-clad farmer rocks on his booted heels. “Hope we didn’t disturb ya.”

“Nah,” I reply, leaning against the windowsill. “What can I help you with?”

“We just want to drop some housewarming gifts,” he gestures at the neat pile of randomness to his side. “And maybe even help ya get used to the farm life. That is if you’re up for it.”

I glance back at you.
